Where the 101 heads toward Ventura County, LA's western edge trades the city grid for gated communities, horse properties, oak-covered hills and lake homes: Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village and the canyons around Topanga.
Most of these are their own cities, several with strict design rules and HOAs. Lots are larger, the Santa Monica Mountains are next door with miles of trails, and the drive into the city is longer, so it's worth testing the commute at rush hour.
