Zip code 91301, Mar 2026 to May 2026, from the Redfin Data Center. 91301 covers Agoura Hills plus nearby unincorporated areas such as Cornell and parts of Old Agoura, so medians blend tract homes with ranch estates. Zip codes don't line up neatly with neighborhood borders, and medians hide a wide range of homes, so treat these as a rough feel for the area.
In 1845 Maria Antonia Machado, a widow, bought Rancho Las Virgenes, and around 1850 her son Jose Paulino Reyes built an adobe ranch house in the foothills below Ladyface Mountain. Considered Agoura Hills' first home, it stayed with the Reyes family into the 20th century and is now a museum and interpretive center, a reminder of the rancho era that came long before the town took its name in the late 1920s.
The homes
Agoura Hills grew up after the Ventura Freeway arrived in the late 1960s, and most of its housing comes from the decades that followed. Neighborhoods like Lake Lindero, built around a small lake, Liberty Canyon and Morrison Ranch are tracts of 1970s and 1980s two-story and ranch homes on suburban lots, many updated over the years. Townhome and condo communities sit closer to the 101, often with shared pools and HOAs.
Old Agoura, south of the freeway, is a different world: ranch homes, custom houses and estates on larger lots with oak trees, riding trails and plenty of horse properties. Part of it is inside the city and part is unincorporated county land. If you're weighing the area against Calabasas to the east or Westlake Village to the west, the main differences are lot sizes, HOAs and how the gated and ungated neighborhoods mix.
The feel
- Ladyface Mountain rises to about 2,031 feet on the south side of the 101 and is the landmark you see from almost everywhere in town.
- The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area surrounds the city, with trailheads at Cheeseboro and Palo Comado canyons to the north and Paramount Ranch, the old Western movie ranch, to the south.
- Agoura Road runs along the south side of the freeway with restaurants, shops and offices, and Chumash Park hosts community events through the year.
- The Reyes Adobe preserves the rancho-era house and grounds as a museum and cultural center.
Eat, drink, shop
- The Old Place (Mulholland Hwy, Cornell). A former general store and post office in the hills south of town, now a saloon-style restaurant known for oak-grilled steaks. The Infatuation
- Shibuya (Park Granada, Calabasas). A few minutes east, a strip-mall sushi bar with oversized rolls, spicy tuna crispy rice and solid nigiri. The Infatuation
- Sagebrush Cantina (Calabasas Rd, Calabasas). A longtime Mexican restaurant and saloon with a big patio and a well-known Sunday brunch with live music. The Infatuation
- Pedalers Fork (Calabasas Rd, Calabasas). A farm-to-table restaurant, bar, coffee roaster and bike shop under one roof in Old Town Calabasas. LA Magazine
Getting around
The 101 runs straight through Agoura Hills, so Calabasas and Woodland Hills are minutes east and Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks minutes west. Sherman Oaks is often 25 to 30 minutes off-peak, and the Westside usually means the 101 to the 405, often 40 to 55 minutes to Santa Monica or Century City, much longer at rush hour. To the south, Kanan Road winds through the mountains to the Malibu coast in about 25 to 30 minutes. There's no rail service, so plan on driving.
What's new
- Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing. The vegetated bridge over the 101 and Agoura Road at Liberty Canyon was in its final construction phase in spring 2026, with opening set for December 2026. (Secret Los Angeles)
- The Commons at Calabasas expansion. Ground broke in February 2026 on a new phase with about a dozen shops and restaurants and 80 apartments, a few minutes east. Some stores could open by the end of 2026. (The Acorn, via Caruso)
Good to know
- Its own city. Agoura Hills has its own planning rules, design review and an oak tree ordinance, and some Agoura addresses are in unincorporated LA County. Confirm which applies with the City of Agoura Hills.
- HOAs. Many tracts and townhome communities have HOAs with dues and architectural review. Read the CC&Rs and budgets early in escrow.
- Fire zones and insurance. Much of the area falls in very high fire hazard severity zones. Check CAL FIRE's map for the address and get insurance quotes before you remove contingencies.
- Horse and large-lot properties. In Old Agoura, check zoning for horses, well or septic systems, fencing, and any equestrian easements.
- Inland weather. Summers run hot and winter nights get cooler than the coast, so check AC, insulation and pool equipment.
Questions people ask
Is Agoura Hills its own city?
Yes. Agoura Hills incorporated as its own city in December 1982, so it has its own planning rules and design review rather than City of LA rules. Some nearby areas with Agoura addresses, like parts of Old Agoura and Cornell, are in unincorporated LA County instead, so confirm which applies.
Why is it called Agoura?
The name comes from Pierre Agoure, a Basque sheep rancher who settled in the area in the 1870s. When residents needed a one-word post office name in the late 1920s, his name went on the list, and the spelling ended up as Agoura.
What kind of homes are in Agoura Hills?
Much of the city is 1970s and 1980s tract housing in neighborhoods like Lake Lindero, Liberty Canyon and Morrison Ranch, many updated over the years. Old Agoura has ranch homes and estates on larger lots, often zoned for horses, and townhomes and condos sit along the 101 corridor.
How far is Agoura Hills from the beach?
Kanan Road winds over the Santa Monica Mountains to the Malibu coast, often 25 to 30 minutes to PCH. Santa Monica or Century City usually means the 101 to the 405, often 40 to 55 minutes off-peak and longer at rush hour.
