Why LA has so many weathers
Los Angeles sits between the Pacific and a ring of mountains, so a few miles can change the weather completely. A few patterns are worth knowing before you pick an area:
- The marine layer. Cool, damp ocean air often blankets the coast in the morning and burns off by afternoon. Inland areas usually clear first.
- May Gray and June Gloom. In late spring and early summer, the beach cities can stay overcast for much of the day while the Valley is sunny and hot.
- Valley heat. The San Fernando Valley is shielded from ocean air by the Santa Monica Mountains, so summer afternoons there often run 15 to 20 degrees warmer than the coast.
- Santa Ana winds. In fall and winter, dry winds from the desert can push temperatures up across the whole basin, including the beaches, and raise fire danger.
- Rain is seasonal. Most of LA's rain falls between November and March. Summers are typically dry.
