Zip code 91011, Mar 2026 to May 2026, from the Redfin Data Center. 91011 covers La Cañada Flintridge. Zip codes don't line up neatly with neighborhood borders, and medians hide a wide range of homes, so treat these as a rough feel for the area.

The anchor
Descanso Gardens

Newspaper publisher E. Manchester Boddy bought this tract in the San Rafael Hills in the late 1930s, named it Rancho del Descanso, and built a hilltop house designed by architect James Dolena, completed in 1938. He planted acres of camellias, and in 1953 the estate passed to Los Angeles County as a public garden. Today Descanso holds one of the largest camellia collections in North America and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

The homes

La Cañada Flintridge is almost entirely single-family homes, many on lots of a quarter acre or more, with mature oaks, long driveways and room for pools and gardens. Flintridge, the southern half, is named for its developer, U.S. Senator Frank P. Flint, and its winding hillside streets hold Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean and traditional estates, many with views across the valley toward the San Gabriels.

North of Foothill Boulevard, the streets flatten into a gentle slope toward the mountains. Here you'll see ranch homes and mid-century houses from the postwar decades, along with plenty of newer custom homes that replaced them. There are very few condos or apartments, so most of the housing market is detached homes.

The feel

  • Descanso Gardens spreads across roughly 150 acres, with an oak woodland camellia forest, a rose garden and a Japanese garden.
  • Foothill Boulevard is the main street, lined with low-rise shopping centers, cafes and restaurants.
  • The Angeles Crest Highway begins at the city's northern edge and climbs into the San Gabriel Mountains, with trailheads and scenic turnouts along the way.
  • Hahamongna Watershed Park, just east of the city, has open space, trails and the first disc golf course.

Eat, drink, shop

Dining in La Cañada leans casual and local, so a couple of these picks are in neighboring Montrose, a few minutes west.

  • Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens (Descanso Dr). A farm-to-table restaurant from chef Rich Mead with a seasonal California menu and a bar built from the gardens' fallen oaks. Pasadena Magazine
  • Backbone (Montrose, N Verdugo Rd). A polished dinner spot from the McCall's Meat & Fish team, known for steak tartare and house-made pasta. The Infatuation
  • How's It Going to End? (Montrose, Verdugo Blvd). A specialty coffee shop in a former dry cleaners from the Dinosaur Coffee founders, with a desert-style patio. Time Out
  • Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery (Pasadena, Green St). Midwestern-leaning American cooking with a cheese counter, about 15 minutes east. The Infatuation

Off-peak, Downtown LA is often 20 to 25 minutes via the 2, Old Pasadena about 10 minutes east, and Glendale and Burbank about 15. Hollywood Burbank Airport is usually 15 to 20 minutes away. There is no rail station in town; the nearest Metro A Line stations are in Pasadena.

Good to know

  • Its own city. La Cañada Flintridge has run its own government since 1976, with its own planning, permits and design review for new homes and larger additions. Verify current rules with the City of La Cañada Flintridge.
  • Fire zones and insurance. Much of the city sits along the foothills and hillsides, and many addresses fall in mapped fire hazard severity zones. Check any address on CAL FIRE's fire hazard severity zone map and get insurance quotes early in escrow.
  • Hillside lots. Sloped lots can mean extra review for grading, retaining walls and additions, so ask early about what a property allows.
  • Older homes, bigger systems. For postwar ranch homes and older estates, look closely at sewer lines, foundations, roofs and any past additions. I'll gather the permit history for any home you like, and if you want my opinion, just ask.
